Welcome to Cangle Foyer
  
 
Supporting People, who provide funding for the support element of the service, visited recently to meet with staff and residents to assertain the level of service provision. They also examined "Outcomes Monitoring" which measures each resident's progress. ( October 2008)
 
Cangle has met all its promises as a Foyer and has been accredited with the quality standard set by the Foyer Federation for another three years. (September 2008)
 
 
In September 1999, this beautiful Victorian listed building, shown above, was given a new lease of life to meet the needs of a new generation. English Churches Housing Group, with St Edmundsbury Borough Council and The Housing Corporation, turned it into a Foyer for young people. The Cangle has revitalised a much loved town centre building in order to help reduce homelessness and unemployment in Haverhill. The scheme combines General Needs properties and the Supported Housing accommodation of the Foyer in a welcoming and relaxing environment.

The Cangle, as well as providing supported accommodation, aims to enable disadvantaged 16-25 year old young people to achieve self-reliance and independence, to bridge the gap between adolescence and adulthood. We have two broad objectives, firstly to equip residents with the skills necessary to live independently and secondly, to become economically active in order to sustain their independence.

The scheme is staffed 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, 365 days per year.

Accommodation

The Foyer consists of 21 rooms arranged in three clusters of 5 and one of 6. Most rooms have a living area, en-suite shower room and upstairs a balcony bedroom. Two rooms are built to mobility standards.

Each cluster has a communal lounge and kitchen area. There are, as part of the Foyer, 10 self contained one bed move on flats.

On moving into the Foyer each resident is allocated a Support Worker. They agree a Support Plan with each resident, which sets out short-term objectives linked to longer term goals. The support plan covers most areas of the young person’s support needs including health and well being, housing, personal development and training and education. These are addressed by our own staff team or by facilitating access to other services in the community.

Our support team is an integral part of this process and offers every resident the opportunity to take advantage of our in-house training programme both on an individual basis and through group work. The aim is to build their self confidence and motivation, improve their reading and writing and help address issues from their past. Residents learn to write their own CV, job application letters, build confidence with telephone techniques and improve social skills. Activities include; career search and employment opportunities, arts, crafts, photography, music, sporting activities, cooking, day and residential trips.
 
We also have an independant Counsellor on site during the week.

We aim to enable residents to take up a place in the community and become active and responsible citizens. The training and activities are also open to other young people in the community.

What is a Foyer?

All young people need a home, support and a springboard into independent living, learning and work. Some don’t get it, Foyers fill the gap.

Foyers provide:

A stable and secure community in which young people can support one another and achieve independence;

Help with finding appropriate employment, training or education to make this possible;

Help with life issues and independent living .

Help with finding permanent accommodation and on-going support when the young person has left the Foyer.

Signposting to other agencies for specialist support in a variety of areas.

The Foyer concept has always included the provision within the Foyer of facilities for the wider community, partly to help to re-integrate young people into their communities, partly for economic reasons, and also to win the community’s support for the Foyer project.

Foyers help over 10,000 young people every year to escape the "no home, no job, no home" cycle.

The Foyer movement is one of the UK's largest providers of youth housing, and is still growing.

Each Foyer is independent, but the Foyer Accreditation Scheme connects them all through shared values and operating principles.

Foyer is a UK-wide organisation representing operational and developing Foyers.
