The name 'Cangle' was given by Mr.Huctchinson around 1960. He was then Head Master and found the name on an old map dated 1737.
It is believed to refer to a dead end, (as Broad Street is next road up from the Cangle) and local people used to refer to Broad Street as the Cangle. The very first name of the school was the Board School from the Haverhill Board, a group of local dignitaries who build the school in 1876.
Did You Know?
- The Cangle School Closed in 1988
- The population of Haverhill in 1870 was 3,700
- There were 23 pubs in Haverhill in 1870
- Compared to the number of pubs in 1870 to the ratio of people, today we would need a total of 138 for the current population!
Robin Miller took these pictures of his son's class in the last year of the Cangle as a school. He has given the pictures a sepia finish to make them look older as they were doing a victorian event at the time.
This ariel photograph shows the Cangle school around 1979 or later. Note the worksheds at the rear of the building which have now been replaced with General Needs properties.
